About
Tom Walsh is an experienced lecturer of International Relations and Politics, who is currently working as an Associate Instructor on the LSE/University of London’s online International Relations programme. He also holds a Visiting Fellowship at the University of Durham’s Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. His research focuses on the Middle East, examining the conflict in Yemen from international, regional, and local perspectives. These themes are thoroughly discussed in his sole-authored book entitled ‘Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the War in Yemen: The 21st Century’s Forgotten War’, which is currently under review at Cambridge University Press.
Tom also researches the role of social media and digital propaganda in international politics. He has also conducted research on the intersection of women’s and indigenous justice. His recent project focused on the women’s movement in Iran, especially on the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. He is currently pursuing a larger project on Saudi Arabia’s use of football as a tool of power politics and is conducting research into the use of blockades, comparing Yemen and Gaza. As well as this, Tom has worked at Georgetown University on a large project examining the nature and scope of informal alliance systems in the modern era. He has also investigated the impact of nuclear testing and waste. He is well placed to offer his insights on conflict mediation, peacebuilding, social media and soft power, and international justice. Tom regularly appears on Gulf Intelligence’s Daily Energy Markets Podcast and has worked to build and develop new external partnerships at the universities he has worked at.
His scholarship has appeared in leading books and journals including Discourse & Society, Global Policy, and the Digest of Middle East Studies. He has also acted as a reviewer for a number of top academic journals, and has presented papers at multiple prestigious international conferences, including the Middle East Studies Association and the British International Studies Association.
